Dr. Devore has over 30 years of psychotherapy experience with all kinds of patients.  He frequently works with healthy everyday people and couples who are experiencing problems in daily living such as dissatisfaction with quality of life, transitions as they age, career changes, being in or out of relationships, going through separation, divorce, or the death of a partner, or approaching dating after a loss.

Dr. Devore has many years of experience dealing with adjustment to long term disease, including many forms of cancer, AIDS/HIV, dialysis dependence, and facing and living with an organ transplant.  His expertise as a certified sex therapist includes all forms of relationship counseling, as well as dealing with all forms of sexual dysfunction, including extensive knowledge of living well with reduced functioning, any form of fetish or alternative sexual practice or lifestyle, and the entire range of gender considerations, from hermaphroditism to sex reassignment.

Dr. Devore has worked in sex research clinics at both the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical School and the Human Sexuality Program at UCLA.   He has written a sex education program that was adopted by counseling center and health center staffs at the university and college level nationally.  He also worked for NIH as a crisis counselor at their AIDS treatment and evaluation center at UCLA.  He even worked with incarcerated sex offenders and has been an expert witness in court on multiple occasions.

Dr. Devore has been sought out by all forms of media as an expert.   He appeared on television as a sex and relationship expert on the Today show, Oprah, Dr OZ, Montel, Sally, Leeza and many others.  He appeared in documentaries for Discovery Channel, PBS, National Geographic television, New Zealand State television, the Oprah Winfrey Network, TLC and BBC.  Some of these documentaries have been shown in film festivals around the world, with two of them, Intersexions, and XXXY, winning the highest awards.  He has also been on many radio shows, including several interviews with Howard Stern.  He has been quoted in most popular print magazines, including Men’s Fitness, Cosmopolitan, the Wall Street Journal, and Dan Savage’s “Savage Love”.  He has been an activist and advocate for the rights of people disabled by HIV as well as a range of people who are considered to be sexually different from the mainstream for the last 30 years.

Divorce

Divorcing can be one of life’s most contentious and even hateful experiences. Understanding why a relationship cannot go forward, and consciously choosing to handle it well is a critical step for anyone going through a divorce. Dr. Devore works with individuals struggling during or after a divorce to help them divorce consciously and divorce well.

Fetish, Kink & Alternative Lifestyles

There are a wide variety of alternative sexual lifestyles that can present a spectrum of issues requiring therapy. Such lifestyles can include sexual rituals, use of objects or animals for sex, practice of blood sports, consumption of fecal matter, and many other persuasions. Dr. Devore helps individuals to embrace, cope with, or overcome these types of less common sexual desires.

Gender Fluidity

People who don’t emotionally or psychologically identify with the gender they were assigned at birth based on their physical characteristics are known as transsexuals, or can be said to be experiencing gender fluidity. Dr. Devore is an expert on gender fluidity issues and has helped a variety of transsexual patients to transition to the gender identity that fits for them best, whether it be male, female or somewhere in between.
